Road Legal Quads
Road legal quads are becoming more and more popular. At one time, quad bikes were purely used off road by farmers and other countryside workers in situations where it was difficult to take a larger vehicle. These farm quad bikes, also known as farm utility vehicles, are typically used for general farming work, herding animals, forestry work and in numerous other situations where it is necessary for a vehicle to cross rough terrain.
Off road quad bikes are now also used more and more for pleasure and there are many centres all over the country that offer off road quad bike activities. However, if you own a road legal ATV you have the convenience of being able to ride the quad on the public highway whilst also having a vehicle that performs off road. This gives you the best of both worlds, with the added benefit of no longer needing a trailer. You can ride to competitions, ride to the trail, commute to work or even go shopping; all these activities are so much more fun on a road legal quad!
A road legal quad must comply with the Road Traffic Act 1988 in order for it to be legally driven on the public highway. Therefore, it must be taxed, insured and, if over 3 years old, have a valid MOT certificate. This means that the road legal quad must have lights, mirrors, indicators, road legal tyres, horn, speedometer, etc. In other words, it must be built to the proper standard required by law. Of course, it must also be registered with the DVLA and number plates must be displayed to the back and the front. Drivers of road legal quad bikes must hold a full driving licence and generally be at least 17 years old. Whether driving on or off road, safety clothing should be worn, in particular a helmet, gloves, boots and suitable protective clothing.
