Farm Quad Bikes
The modern farm quad bikes are a result of the development of the first ATCs, which were originally a Japanese big boys' toy. Before we knew it, the thing became an international 'must have' status symbol. The fat-tyred tricycles pioneered in1969 by Honda became popular, not only with farmers, but with anyone who wanted to ride over rough ground. It was not long before it was realised that there was a place for these utility vehicles in the leisure market and soon other manufacturers were producing their own models.
As the demand for an efficient and rugged work vehicle grew, modifications where made to enable load-carrying and engines increased in size. This led to the addition of an extra wheel in 1984. The quad bike was born. This was seen as a major step forward as demand increased so that, today, all the major motorcycle makers have a range of quad bikes coming off their production lines.
Many farmers switched from Land Rovers to quad bikes, because if they needed to move animals or equipment, the farm quad was often the best option. It was recognised as a rugged and reliable 'go anywhere' vehicle.
The modern quad has developed considerably and, in the late 1980s, one of the major developments was the introduction of the four-wheel drive all terrain vehicle. These utility quads are now one of the most popular types of farm quad bike because of their ability to haul loads, tow trailers and cross rough ground. The engines are bigger, brakes and suspension are more efficient and the range of accessories is virtually endless. Luggage racks, fatbars, spider grips, nerf bars and winches, etc., all work towards making today's farm quad bikes an indispensable addition to so many workplaces.
